About Eastern Regional Special Police
Eastern Regional Special Police is comprised of dedicated company police officers serving communities throughout North Carolina. Currently, there are 51 company police agencies operating in our state, ranging from small units with one officer to larger teams with up to sixty officers. Our company police officers patrol and enforce state criminal laws on various properties, including private and public schools, county and state hospitals, shopping centers, apartment complexes, office buildings, golf courses, recreational lakes, and train stations. Company police agencies are an integral part of the criminal justice system in North Carolina, supplementing state, municipal, and county police agencies by alleviating some of their service call burdens. Our mission is to enhance public safety and ensure the well-being of the communities we serve.
History of Company Police
The history of company police in North Carolina spans nearly 125 years. As unique law enforcement challenges emerged that existing officers couldn't adequately address, new agencies were established to manage these issues. These officers, known as 'special policemen,' were authorized for railroads in 1871, for electric or water power companies and construction companies in 1907, and for manufacturing companies in 1923 (N.C. Code Ann. §§ 3484-3488, Michie, 1935). In many small towns and communities, special policemen were often the sole officers available to assist the county sheriff and his deputies. The authority to appoint these special police officers lay with the Governor until 1971, when their oversight was transferred to the Department of Justice by the State Government Reorganization Act (N.C.G.S. § 143A-54).
